Routine Breast Examination

This should be carried out by a qualified doctor to examine the breasts for any deviation from normal. Both the breasts along with the corresponding axillae (armpits) and the region of the neck are examined for any lumps or abnormal contour of the breast. The doctor will also look for any retraction of the nipple or discharge from the nipple.

A Routine Breast examination should be regularly carried out on any woman older than 20 years. It is especially relevant in early pregnancy especially to rule out inverted nipples which can hamper breastfeeding. If recognized early, some simple corrective measures can be instituted.

All women above the age of 20 years should be taught how to examine their breasts themselves so that they can do a regular Breast Self Examination, which helps in early detection of any abnormalities.
